Sony MDR-7506 headphones

Post by Sam Minnitti »

I was wondering if anyone uses these headphones in their home studio for mix-downs and what you think of them.

Thanks

I'm on my second set of these headphones. I love them. They have great, even frequency response with nice bass. And they are comfortable.

That being said, however, mixing with headphones is always a shaky proposition, in my opinion. I guess you could do it, though, as long as you double-check your choices by playing the mix on another system, on a boom box or in your car.

A lot of things that sound great in headphones just don't work as well when they come out of speakers and into the air. The opposite is true, though: things that sound great on speakers usually sound great on headphones, too.
[This message was edited by Alan Kirk on 31 January 2003 at 09:30 PM.]

Great headphones. Good tone, rugged, good isolation. But it's probably not a good habit to mix with headphones. Nothing is more accurate when building a mix than the sound from two well placed familiar sounding speakers/monitors.

Those Sony headphones are awfully bright...I know several studio musicians who don't like them for that reason(and just as many who DO like'em).I like the Fostex T-20s myself...you need some speakers too.

The phones that keep coming up time after time seem to be the Sonys and the AKG 240s. I have not tried the AKGs. However, about a year ago I tried and compared the Sonys with a pair of Sennheiser EH-2200s. I bought the Senns. On the exact same recording the bass response was a little more distinct and tighter. It was subtle, but I personally could hear it. They were about the same price.

I later found out that there is another model of Senns that is about $20 more, and I would have tried them if I had known. But I'm very happy with the ones I got.

Whatever you get, try to match the impedance of the phones with the output of your recorder (or whatever you're hooking them up to).

And I agree: things that sound good on the phones stand a good chance of not sounding as good when they come out of a pair of speakers.
