Monitoring With an Ear Phone

When I watch various C&W and Rock shows on T.V. I often see the guitar player wearing a small ear phone attached to wire, the kind you see juggers wear with a Sony Walkman. Why is he wearing an ear phone in the first place and where does it get attached too. Who is monitoring.

I think that is a monitor feed on the whole group so he can hear what going on.

Those are in ear monitors. I use them at the Church where I play. They work great when you have a sound man that knows what he's doing.
