Signal loss thru rackmount tuner?

I am contemplating getting a rack mounted tuner. My ??? is: Is there a significant loss of signal when running thru one?

I have tried running my signal thru several tuners, including one expensive rack mount, and those I have tried rob tone. I have tried them before the preamp, after the preamp, in the efx loop. Same bad result.

A high quality A/B switch is one solution. With this arrangement you can keep the tuner out of the signal chain that you want to hear.

Now, I just unplug the guitar from the preamp, plug it into the tuner, touch up the tuning silently. Then plug back in.

Tuners I have tried sending signal thru are:
Boss TU-12
Peterson VS1
Peterson Auto Strobe Rack Mount

Jake, I have a Korg DTR-1 and I run it like so. Guitar->GX-700->vol. pedal->amp
->second output to tuner. That way I can tune silently by turning off my volume pedal. The GX-700 is a processor for reverb and delay. [This message was edited by John Lacey on 26 January 2003 at 05:31 AM.]

John, I use the built-in tuner in my GX-700, why don't you?

It can be set up in the global parameters to mute the signal when the tuner is being used, and is plenty accurate for my needs.

Jake, I have used a Boss TU-50 half space tuner in my MosValve rack for several years without any signal degradation or any other problems...this one has a mute circuit also...it is not mfgd. any more but is a great little tuner.
I have seen the Korg r/m tuners in many a pro's rack so it's hard to believe these guys would use them it they messed with their sound. I think it depends on the type and quality of the unit. JMHO
Just to be clear, this unit is cabled in line at all times and is at the front end of the chain right after the vol. pedal.

Jake, I went to Radio shack and got a small box, switch, and female 1/4" jacks and built a A/B switch to switch the tuner completely out of line..I added a leg clamp/attachment from GL and clamp it to the leg like the Session 500 switches..

I use a Hilton Digital Sustain unit (matchbox/preamp box) between my guitar and volume pedal. At Radio Shack I purchased a little black doo-dad (technical term) that has a quarter-inch male plug on one end and two quarter-inch female jacks on the other end. I plug the doo-dad into the output of the Hilton Digital Sustain unit. One female jack is used for the output to the volume pedal and the other female jack is used for the output to my tuner. This way I have a splitter before the volume pedal and can tune silently.

This works very well with absolutely no change in tone. This will not work if you do not use some type of matchbox, as it will screw up the impedance and the tone will suck (another technical term).
