George L TW Pickup ??'s

Post by Bobby Boggs »

How does this pickup compare to say the BL 710, 910 GL-E66?Or an Emmons single coil wound to say 19 ohms? I've never been one to change pickups.I've had the above mentioned pickups on various guitars I've owned. To tell the truth I thought the Tommy White pickup was made by BL. Thanks ------------bb

I had these (TWs) on a new guitar I ordered and changed them out. Not very loud, and I was not getting enough "brightness" out of my wound strings with them. (No hum, very quiet, kinda mellow sounding) I opted for the new BL XR-16s and am pretty happy so far. A little "to bright" on the treble strings, but the wound ones now have a "in your face" grainy sound I kinda like - and NO HUM AT ALL. I have 710s on a PP and got kinda tired of them. The original Emmons single coils sound best to me, but they do hummmmm. I am sure the TW's are good pups, (he sounds great on anything) but they were not what I was looking for.
[This message was edited by Dyke Corson on 07 December 2002 at 10:02 PM.]

The best ones I've used so far are the BL 710's. I had them on a Legrande II and it made the difference in me keeping the guitar. I've got them in a 66 P/P right now it's just bright like you want it with no hum, great guitar to record with. I had a single coil Sho-Bud pick-up rewound by Jerry Wallace and I have to say he did a hell of a job on it for $35 complete. Very little hum with the single coil sound.

Jerry's own single coils have about the least amount of hum that I've heard from any single coil, and the tone is just as sweet and balanced as you could ask for ....Jim

The TW's are another variation of the blade design...not the best, but I will not get into the 'subjective-interpretation' argument. Single coils are just that...the better the quality control and DESIGN...the better the sound. It is not trial and error by winding wire around magnets, it is mathematics. Even though Bill Lawrence still owns the patent on the blade design, he won't make them. Simply, his newer design far surpasses the old in sound reproduction. Most pro's have gone to a humbucking design because of the noise reduction feature inherent..me included...and Bill's are the only pickups DESIGNED for steel, noise-free, full representation of sound(you get to hear what your guitar actually sounds like...no 'peaks', no 'valleys'), just real sound.
I've been after Bill for years to make a single coil replacement for steel. He procrastinated, I'm still asking, because there are(I'm sure), purists out there who want that feature in an after market pickup...and if Bill were to make one..it would be the best DESIGN.
I capitalize the word design, because the last thing Bill will work is trial & error....the man is a walking equation. You talk about Hall of Fame material......he's it!
