Profex, Tubefex, Transtubefex, Autograph batteries

Post by Ken Fox »

Just got an email from a fellow Forumite with possible battery damage to a Profex 2! Again, people should be looking at the batteries in these units! If they are original, then it is well over due for a battery! I have replaced about 40 in the last year alone! Fortunately none had damaged circuit board due to leakage, but all I changed were leaking! This battery can now be replaced with a NiMh battery and tends to "gas" less than the original NiCad battery. Peavey has these avaiable and I use the same brand/model for all my repairs.

Hey Ken....Less than a month ago...I set my system up (I have a Tube-Fex) and after having it on for about 2 minutes....it all of a sudden went dead....I opened the case and found that one of the inside fuses had blown....so I replaced the fuse the next day and turned the unit on and the fuse blew again. So I took it to a friend of mine who does repair work for Peavey....upon examination of the unit he told me that the the battery had a leak and caused some of the circuitry to burn out. He fixed it for me right there as I waited. This had a blue colored battery in it. He also tested the battery and said that it was fine, and cleaned the area and put something on it to protect the circuit board....Just my experience. HAL

Hal, I would have replaced the battery. Once it has leaked, it is likely to do it again! The blue ones are typically NiCad. The new NiMh are more of an Aqua or green/blue color. I would keep an eye on it and see if it starts to leak again! I lost two Peavey Autigraphs due to leaky batteries. I had to have both circuit boards replaced. The worst thing is if the batteries freeze! That tends to make them leak. Most of the old ones I see have had a blue residue growing on one end of the battery. It is just a good idea to look inside once in a while! A Q-tip and acetone will clean up the battery and circuit board until a new one can be installed.

Just a note to all. This is not just a problem with Peavey products! Many products that have user memory have batteries! It is a good idea to check any units with user memory.
