RV3 Vs RV5 !!!

Post by Bob Mainwaring »

I know that this should be in the electronics section but I think it would get a greater audience here.

I've been in the market recently for an RV3 Unit, to be told by one the local guys here that they are now superceded by an RV5 and the 3 is no longer even listed in Rolands' "dogalog".

Has anyone heard anything about these later, newer units??? apparently they are supposedly far superior according to the guy in the shop who's quite an electronics "whiz-kid" arround these parts.

My understanding is that the two sounds - echo and delay are going to be much more atuned to the ears -------any comments greatly appreciated.

Bob, this isn't the RV models, but I have both the Boss DD2 and DD3. With the wide range of control on them and you can ad all the other adjustments on the amp controls, I can't tell the differance between them. I sometimes wonder if it's just marketing????? The DD2 isn't available anymore either.

I wonder is the Boss unit you're talking about is the DD5. That is a delay unit. They also make the DD3. You can tap in the tempo on the DD5. It also has stereo output.

Erv, I'm not sure myself as I left it up to the guy to order one as he's ordering one for display as well as one for another steelie friend of ours.

HERE is your RV-5. The biggest difference seems to be dual inputs---it is true stereo instead of RV-3's mono in, stereo out. Also has some different reverbs.

I would have to say that the BIGGEST difference is that with the RV-5 you apparently no longer have that RV-3 setting #7 which is a blend of delay and plate reverb mixed together. I personally thought that setting was the most special thing about the RV-3.

I talked to Bobbe Seymour recently and he had the rv3 in stock. I believe that Lloyd Green uses this particular unit. Give Bobbe a call and check it out. regards, fred

Besides having 2 inputs, what's stereo about the RV-5? You can't split the signal to each side I assume, so you're just getting the same reverb to 2 amps/sides, right? I use a DD-3 for delay and just go out the line to one of 2 amps that I use. Gives a nice 'stereo' effect to my ear.
[This message was edited by Steve Feldman on 11 October 2002 at 04:59 AM.]

The RV-3 is the way to go. I have two of them. One in each of two steel rigs I have. Great unit for price, portability, and most important of all, sound. Image

The biggest difference is the RV5 is reverb only!

I was just gonna say that... Where is the delay knob???

I'm near a Guitar Center so I might stop in and check it out today.

An option I've come to like with reverb is the "pre-delay"... The time between when you hit the note and when the reverb comes on.
I've been using this parameter as a "virtual" delay (it's really only reverb), and it's pretty cool.

On my Lexicon LXP-1 there is only like 240ms of pre-delay available though. I'd like to find a unit that sounds like that but has more pre-delay on the reverb.

Also, the "stereo" effect on the RV-3 is set up with an alogarythm to create a 3-D stereo sound image when using the stereo outputs (I read that somwhere).
I don't believe it sends the same exact sound to both outputs.
That reverb/delay setting number 7 on the RV-3 is a good example of the 3-D effect when using 2 amps or a stereo steel rig.

With two separate ins and outs, I would think this would be the perfect mate to a DD3 or DD5, which both have two outputs that could be run to the inputs on the RV5.

Lee, exactly. That's their idea; preserving a stereo delay or chorus signal from another pedal while adding stereo reverb after it. Stays stereo the whole time, never gets mono-'d.

Many thanks for all the input guys, it looks like I'll be switching to the RV3 after all -especially as a good pickin' friend of ours loaned me his RV3 last Friday night to add weight and change my already suspect sound.
This is a great way (b0bs forum)for any guy to find out all the flaws etc......you're the best!!!
