Which makes the biggest difference in your sound, your pickup or your amp?

Everything in the "chain" from your picking technique to the speaker in the amp is important. I've been swapping things around for over 20 years. Different guitars sound different in the same amp, same guitar sounds different in different amps. Swap the pickups, same guitar sounds different. Good guitar and bad amp sounds bad, whereas a bad guitar and a good amp might sound ok.

It's the never-ending quest for the "Sir Gallahads" of the steel guitar.

Chas, you are so right. The combination is what counts. Makes it tough. I finally got MY final sound (I think).
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 22 September 2002 at 03:53 PM.]

The amp, in my opinion. I change pickups between songs on my Sierra. The difference is fairly subtle. If I were to switch amps, though, look out!

On the amp subject, amp with 2/12 versus 1/15
speaker, same basic amp.I know the lows will not be as low with the 12s.But,will the mid/high tones be as good?

Bobby is right. In fact, just changing your mid control a couple of notches will give you far more tonal variation than any pickup change you might make.
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 24 September 2002 at 06:04 AM.]
