amp hiss question

Post by Dennis Olearchik »

The amp is a solid state. The hiss goes away when I touch the guitar body. Tried plugging the amp into another outlet w/a surge protector and it seemed to reduce the hiss a little. Any suggestions on how to completely get rid of the hiss would be appreciated. Thank you. Dennis

Questions:
1. Are you using an external effects box?
2. Does the hiss get louder when you turn up the volume or is it constant regardless of level?
3. What happens when you unplug the guitar cord at the amplifier?
4. Does the amp have a 3-prong or polarized plug? If not, have you tried reversing the plug?

Ron,

The amp has built-in effects which I didn't even consider could be causing the hum.

Anyway I tried your suggestions and now the damn thing won't even hiss a little.

I'll leave the amp on for an hour or so and see if the hiss comes back.

Thanks for taking the time to provide me with some trouble-shooting tips.

Best regards,

Dennis

Rob, sorry 'bout mis-spelling your name. The "b" and "n" keys are obviously too close together for my fat fingers!

Dennis,

Is the problem a hiss or a hum? Both?

Rob,
Did I ever mess up in the description of this "problem". It's the guitar that's producing the "hum". The hum gets louder as I turn the volume knob up but the hum lessens considerably when I touch the body of the guitar). Sorry for steering you down the wrong path.
