Dobro Pickup

Our steel player wants to start playing some dobro on stage. Can Anyone tell me what would be the best pickup/preamp system for an acoustic Dobro that will be played at high volumes and that would have the least feedback.

Fishman has a new reso pickup that works very well. About $100. maybe less.

It will feedback at close range, but I used a notch filter on my Fender Acoustisonic Pro amp to kill it.

Best pickup i have seen for these beasts yet. But, nothing beats a mic.

If the artist/instrument is the feature of the show, go with mic, and maybe mix in some of the Fishman.

If hitting some licks on a few songs, I think you will like the Fishman by itself.

Check out an LR Baggs paracoustic DI. Its a decent preamp that can help with a bunch of problems once you decide on a pickup.

If the bands stage volume is too loud my experience is that it is hopeless without a major league sound system (In ears, drum iso....). The only way I could play dobro on stage with a loud band was to only use it when we did a little unplugged section in part of a set.

There's a top pro, whose name I won't mention (though he's welcome to respond), that told me he uses a Match-Bro with a Reso guitar.

He has a magnetic pickup on the Reso and sends the signal to a Match-Bro.

Their stage mix is loud and this setup resolved his feedback problems.

I have a dobro pickup that I bought from Zum several years ago. It mounts in front of the built-in pickup with double-sided tape and there's a switchbox that plugs into the plugin on the steel and you can switch from the built-in to the mounted pickup. When used with the dobro patch on my ProFex ll, you can hear the wood in the dobro.

I had a Schatten pickup installed on my Regal, it fastens on the bottom of the resonator, you take the nut off the bolt that holds the bridge on the resonator, place the pickup on with a bit of putty, and put the nut back on, tightening it till you get the right sound. I had it installed at the store where I bought the pickup.you can get info and pictures at www.schattendesign.com.
You will get feedback if you stand in fromt of your amp or too close to the monitors, but it's a good natural sound even without a preamp or graphic eq.

I save myself alot of feedback headaches by using a Peavey Ecoustic 112 with a anti feedback notch filter (yes Mike Brown, I DO use a Peavey amp!). It is a GREAT reasonably priced amp for acoustic instruments. The soft cone speaker sounds fabulous.
