Mic Preference?

Post by Dennis Detweiler »

Need some professional opinions on vocal mics. This is for a female vocalist. Live gigs. Your preference?
Thanks

Dennis, Try a Shure SM-58. They are tried and true. By the way see you Saturday.

Hi Craig...Should be a good time saturday. Kirk's jam gets bigger every year.
Maybe we can take your Emmons to a pawn shop if you want to get rid of it quickly? Image You'll have to wait about 9mo for a zum. Like having a baby. Worth the wait though.

The SM 58 is where I would start also. However, if you have a good music store near you with a good stock of mics, I would first go there with the singer and audition several mics. The idea is to match the singer to the mic. Assuming she is not up on mics, don't plant any pre-conceived notions in her head. Just try out several and ask for her opinion. She probably knows what sound she is after. This is just how I would approach it, for what it's worth.

I recommend the Peavey PVM22 Diamond Microphone. Yes, I do work for Peavey Electronics and I have used the SM58 mic for 20 years. But, the PVM22 has a much clearer in upper mid ranges. I invite you to compare these two microphones for yourself at your local Peavey dealer. Here is our dealer locator from the Peavey website;http://www.peavey.com/support/dealerlocator/

I'd like to hear your comments.

Hi Mike...West Music in Coralville/Iowa City is our Peavey dealer. Their stock is low on Peavey gear. They have no mics to compare. They sell AKG and Shure :~(

George.. our largest local music store only handles Shure and AKG. She has a Peavey mic presently and likes it over the AKG and Shure. She's had the Peavey for about 15+ years. It was ruined in a teardown when the set screw came out and someone jerked the guts out of the mic. Not sure what model mic it is? At the time of purchase it was supposed to compete with the 58.

At our stores, after a A-B test with the Shure SM58, we ALWAYS sell the PVM22! We have been using these mics in our rental PA for about 4 years, it's a very tough heavy duty mic with a great sound. Try the A-B test yourself.
