Stomp Box Power Supply Question

Post by Bob Tuttle »

I have a stomp box delay unit that requires a 9 volt, 300 ma power supply. I have a power supply that is 9 volts, 600 ma. Would it be feasible to use this power supply on the unit or would I have a problem? Thanks for any information.

You can use it with no problem. The voltage and polarity must be right and AC or DC as required. The extra amperage is okay. Think of it as plugging a 2 amp radio into a 30 amp outlet. The device only pulls the current it needs.

One more caveat, there have been previous posts about cheap unfiltered power supplies making weird noises in devices. As long as the unit is quiet with your power supply, you should be fine. Image

Dan Electro makes a great 9-volt power supply that sells for about $10. Absolutely quiet.

As Jim Smith said, make sure the polarity is correct, otherwise, you're in good shape. BTW, Jim, are you a member of the "Jim Smith Club?"

I've had good results with Radio Shack power supply units. They coms in different amperages and are less than $10 as I recall. I'm running two Boss FX devices of one 200 m.a. supply.

I think Boss makes a harness rig that allows you to run several stomp boxes off one power supply. It's used in their stomp box case unit. Check out the Sam Ash or the Musician's catalogs/web sites. Some of those can get pretty pricey for an ol' boy just pickin' steel on weekends!

Thanks for the replies. I found that the plug on the power supply won't fit the receptacle on the stomp box, so I guess I'll have to buy one anyway. I'll probably check out Radio Shack. Thanks again for all the information.
