Advice on pre amp needed

Post by Matt Martin »

I have ond old Crown D150A power amp and was wondering what type of pre amp would work well with this. Can a regular stereo pre amp work?? Some day I'll get a nice steel amp but right now this is what I have to work with. Would love your comments.

Evans makes a great pre-amp designed for steel guitar. There is one for sale on the Buy and Sell Forum. You would still need to get a reverb or delay unit to use with it. If you are going to stick with rack mount equipment, you can get a Lexicon unit for less than $200. You could also get a Boss RV3. Still less than $200.

I second what Lee says, Evans, and you might also get a good speaker cabinet and put in a Black Widow 1501. I got a MusicMan, with the "rubbermaid" cover out of a pawn shop that sounds really good.

You might want to think about picking up a used (they're all used by now...) Mesa Boogie V-Twin pre. They're pretty good, IMO. Clean as a whistle and you can also dial in a little grit if you so desire.

I've had great success with the TubeWorks "Real Tube 2" model 9002. Mine has the "steel mod." It's a tube pre-amp and works with most power amps, as I understand. I'm using a Gallien-Krueger 120 Micro MLS guitar amp, using only the power amp section. It makes a very compact rig. The speaker I use is an EV-15.

I have a G.W.Walker stereo-steel pre-amp listed in BUY AND SELL that is also a good unit. John
