710 or 910 or 108n
I know this has been brought up before, but I've searched topics and can't really find answer that I am looking for. Is the 710 hotter than 910 or just brighter. How does the 910 compare to the emmons 108n. I know everyone says that 910 are more mellow. I do not use a matchbox or anything like that. My pedal is a goodrich 120 standard passive pedal, and I use a profex II and 2 12" black widow cabinets. Which do you think would best fit my needs? Any help would be appreciated.

The 710 is a full range(tonal) pickup...nothing antenuated, what your guitar sounds like-is what you get. On an Emmons---a great choice, for me, the only choice--back and forth with the LXR 16. The 910 was designed for 'brighter' guitars(read-'thinner'), the names of which everyone knows and need not be brought up here. It seems really 'full-bodied' guitars are a rarity, and still in this day and age are restricted to just a few brands, hence the search for the perfect pickup. No pickup will make a guitar sound like more than it is....less?...you betcha! Pickups do not add highs, lows, or anything else...they can only antenuate. Bobbe Seymour singing 'You Light Up My Life' through a Shure SM58 will pretty much sound just as wonderful through a Neumann....except through the latter, he will be clearer and have better definition and warmth......just what we all need! Oh, my poor little ears!!......Scared myself!

There are several threads running currently discussing various humbucker pickups.
In my humble opinion, I would much rather reduce the highs (by amp or tone control on my guitar) than try to boost the highs.
Boosting always adds noise. Reducing usually quiets the signal.
We need to find out which humbucker will work best with a particular guitar (Emmons LLII in my case), that will allow the full tonal spectrum, put out by the guitar, to come through. Then, I can reduce certain tonal ranges as needed.
Am I making any sense to anyone??

I understand completely. I'm thinking with the 710 being hotter, I probably wouldn't have to run my gain as high. I talked to Reggie Duncan and he says his dad has a 710 on is legrande and it sounds fine.
Jeff peterson says the 710 is the way to go.

In my experience, I have to agree with both Jeff and Tony. I'll take the hotter 710 pickup and adjust the amp to suit. Works good with my Carter.
This way I have a clean , clear sound from the pickup and always can add mellow on the amp....al

To those of you who have been following this thread.
After some tweaking this weekend at my gigs, I have decided to keep the 108 humbucker in my Emmons. I think two things have happened to really sell me on this pickup.
First, I've finally dialed it in. Got some help from my local pro (Bud Hall)and then tweaked to my own ear from there. Bud convinced me to take out more bass than I would have. This helped accentuate the highs on my amp. Had plenty of bass when I got up to stage volume.
Second, I've learned to retrain my ear. There is more than one pleasing tone out there.
So, I've fallen in love with my new Emmons all over again. Now I'm a really happy camper.

Well I decided to go with the 710, and I am glad I did. It is the best sounding pickup I have ever tried. Thanks to Jeff Peterson for the advice and Reggie Duncan, and everybody else who responded. Thanks to Larry Petree for the great deal.
