I've always used stomp-boxes (cuz I like all the purty colors they come in ) but I'm thinking about changing over to a rack unit.
My question is this:
I like to run most of my effects BEFORE the volume pedal so that the effect is receiving the full signal from the pickup. But I want my delay AFTER the volume pedal so I don't clip-off the repeats. Do the rack units steelers commonly use --like the ProFex-- allow you to sequence your effects in this way?
I don't know about the ProFex II, but my Boss GX-700 does let you reorder the effects. I run my volume pedal in the effects loop which can also be moved in the chain. Thus I can pick and choose which effects are before the volume pedal and which are after.
Note that unless you use a stereo volume pedal all stereo effects should go after the volume pedal. The GX's effects loop is mono so I am forced to do that.
Hi Greg, I'm not sure about the rack gear, but I use the stomp boxes{BOSS}, and I come out of the steel right into the effects. I have an enhancer,envelope filter,chorus,digital delay,and a digital reverb. I'm going to do somthing a little different like you are talking about to keep the natural decay of the delay and reverb,and that is after the chorus go into the volume pedal,come back out and into the delay and reverb,and then on to the amp.
You can put your effects in any order and also in parallel or series with each other. I have never had any luck running a volume pedal after the Profex, to much gain for the pedal is my best guess. There is an effects patch on the unit, I have never tried the pedal there. You would have to set that up for each patch (a lot of trouble). It is a terrific unit for steel. A lot of great presets are available for steel use. I have a Profex 2 and an upgraded Tubefex (version 2.1), both are great units.
One more point. When I used stomp boxes I used to put everything before the volume pedal. I like to be in control of the effects and with the delay, like to be able to stop the delay repeats with my volume pedal. Bobbe Seymour even recommends this for the doubling effects, so you can stop on the beat and kill the last repeat by backing off the pedal.
