I played last night at the backroom venue that gave me all sorts of hum trouble a month ago. I tried everyone's suggestions and in the end I couldn't lose the hum. I reduced it a little with guitar positioning.
It was suggested that the BL 912 is not as hum resistant as others.
So, here's the question----
---How effective is a good standard humbucker (the 9** series is not 'standard', I suppose, because of its sidewinder design).
But with, for instance, a 710, are we talking about 100% hum cancellation in bad circumstances or is it just a lot better than a single coil but still susceptible to hum in extreme (Freddy's backroom) environments? Yeah, I'll becalling Bill L. but I want to the answer to this first.
Humbucking question

The 712 is about as hum-resistant as the 912. I know this from one very bad experience in a hum-saturated environment, where I tried everything, including another steel but 712 and 912 both hummed.. I was ready to give up, but the engineer showed me a Gretsch guitar that produced no hum! So while everybody waited, I put a George L E-66 on the Zum and it was free of hum. Bill Lawrence will tell you that is because George L's puts so much shielding on their pickups that they spoil the sound.
After that date I took the George L out and put the 912 back on the Zum.

Beautiful. Great information. I was looking forward to trying a 712 just for the hell of it but I'm happy enough with the 912. This saves me some $$ for sure. I will definitely try your solution.
BTW----when I made my outrigger stomp box rig I powered the boxes with a Boss PSA 120 and some Radio Shack modular cords with male & female two prong connectors. These fit real snugly and would make excellent pickup plugs so that you could change out pickups without soldering/unsoldering. If I do get another pickup I will probably try this out.
