More Home Studio gear talk

.....of the low-end kind.

I am a bottom dweller with a Fostex 1/4" 8-track. Did a decent living room session with singer/acoustic guitar and steel. I borrowed a BBE sonic maximizer for mixdown with good results and I'm now looking to buy one piece of gear to give me best bang/buck for the mixdown process that will improve limited quality tracks. (No lectures please. My setup is what it is. My budget is what it is. The BBE is the sort of thing I'm talking about--it definitely enhanced an inferior project and helped elevate it to club-demo level).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows the Behringer DSP9024 Ultradyne (not specifically an exciter but it has this feature as well as some attractive compression features.) This unit interests me. I'd like to hear anything about this, as well as other Behringer products such as Ultrafex. (I mean--Utra means good and fex & dyne mean, like, thing, I think, right?)

I just did some browsing and I'm real impressed with the TC, Johan, and I appreciate your suggestion. Unfortunately it is a Tuna steak and I've got a cat food budget. The Behringer is $179. You get what you pay for? You bet. But since I've heard good reviews of other Behringer stuff, I was hoping maybe this was an effective tool.

We did not care much for the Behringer gear we tried in our studio. It all seemed to darken the sound. It is inexpensive, but evidently they exactly copied other manufacturers gear such as Mackie. There are some lawsuits still pending.

Jon,

Check out the Joe Meek half rack channel strip. It will improve your imput stage so you can get better tape saturation and can help with a bit of compression/eq in the mix if needed.

I avoid Berringer because of there blatent
rip offs of hard working innovative companies.

Not sure if this is cool to talk about downloading software for free, but if you have a good soundcard, and you just want to do some global mixdown effects. You can get all of the TC Native mastering software, sonic maximizer, and steinberg finalizing software for free online.

I do all of my multitrack work on a stand alone digital workstattion, then dump it to my PC and start tweaking w/ the high end programs for mastering. In your case, you might get some great results w/ the natural tape compression of you 8 track, then dump to your PC and tweak the levels, EQ, and finalizing.

Check out Kazaa.com they have everything!

My appreciation for the ideas.

Matt--my computer is old & slow & in the other room. Onboard audio/processing just ain't in the picture until it dies and I'm forced to join the 21st century.

On Ebay you can usually find an Alesis 3630 stereo Compressor for around 100 bucks, That and some decent reverb/delay proccessor give a lot of bank for the buck.

Back before I went digital, My fostex x-15, a nanoverb and a 3630 yeilded pretty nice results. Just find a way to keep a good signal to noise ratio and you can get some great sound to tape.
