Twin speakers
I've got a 70's Twin that needs new speakers, and I'm uncertain what to replace them with. I want a good guitar sound primarily, vintage or classic twin, I'd guess you'd say, though I do use this amp for steel as well. What has worked well for you other Twin twangers? And is there someone around eastern Iowa who's good on tweaking Twins up nice? Thanks!

Bruce, Talk to Jon Thomson at "Bob's Guitars", in Cedar Falls Iowa. His number is on the web site at www.bobsguitars.com. Bob is a Fender dealer for anything Fender. That's where i get all my Fender gear.

Bruce, there are lots of good speakers available, but speakers are like strings: everybody has their preferred sound. The Jensens are very good, 2 C12N's would be sweet, but if it's a 135 watt twin I don't know if they'll hold up. Other ones to check out: Weber, some Celestions, some Peaveys. Ask your amp guy when you find one.

As a guitar player and a steel player, I have found that one speaker does not work perfectly for both instruments. I like JBL's for steel but hate them for guitar. I love Jensens for guitar but for cleaner louders sounds they waffle out. I agree with the other players that taste varies, but we need to be realistic. One amp, speaker, distortion unit, compressor, vol ped will not be optimal for both applications. So, I do not compromise; I have one volped, overdrive, amp, speaker set up for each. Though this costs more an takes more space and time to set up the payback is good tone for all.

If you decide to go with the Jensens, you can get them cheap online at www.vintagespeaker.com They ship quickly, too. I just got a pair of C12Ns from them for my Pro Reverb.
Edit - I fixed the link. There was an extra dot after "com" which was messing it up.
[This message was edited by Bruce Derr on 20 January 2002 at 04:27 PM.]

I really like the Celestion Vintage 30's in my Mesa and Fender Tone-master cabinets. They have an 'open' sound in the mid-range and aren't as barky as other Celestions (for six string, of course). But you won't know how any speaker will sound in your amp and to your ears until you try it. And Bruce, the link goes to the home page of a web hosting company. Do you have another url directly to their site?

Wierd... When I click on the link, I get the hosting service, but when I type the same thing in manually, it goes to the site. Here's a direct link: http://www.ken-ton.com/jscinta/vintagespeaker/
I hope that works!

This is what I would do if I had a twin: use one JBL (or black widow) and one other speaker, where the other is similar to the original fender speakers (Jenson, Utah or whatever). This is a great combination, it's lighter than 2 jbls, and sounds better than either. It really is a case where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Just be sure to use two 8 ohm speakers to maintain the impedence of the twin.
