Webb amps

Post by Dave Zirbel »

Is anyone using a Webb other than the 6-14E? I'm looking for a good versitile amp for both guitar and steel. I'm thinking the GP, CB Starburst, or maybe even the Galaxy 250 would work. From reading the specs and info, it seems that they all might sound very similar to each other with each having different features. The lack of the Sensitivity knob concerns me. I wonder what the models without the 3 way tone selector sound like.

My email to Jimmie came back with an error message so I'm asking you guys and gals. I'll call him eventually when I get the chance.

Has anyone heard the Eminence speakers they are using?

Thanks folks! Dave

Dave,
Jim Webb sent me a Webb labeled Eminence
speaker to try last year. It's a great
speaker. The main thing is that the
high end frequencies aren't "in your
face" as much as the JBL's. Some guys
prefer that, some don't. I didn't hold
onto the Webb speaker & actually ended
up installing my own EVM-15L's.
But that's just me. Different speakers
either boost or cut certain frequencies.
Just depends what you wanna hear.

Larry, which speaker are you using with your CB and what size? 12" or 15"?

Jay, I tried the 4 ohm 15" Eminence from a Fender amp I have and it sounds pretty good. I see what you mean. I like both speakers. I'm wondering if that's the same model speaker Webb is using.

I'm also wondering if the amps that are built to have only one 12" speaker, what the speakers rated as far as ohms. Are they specially made 4 ohm 12"?

Thanks guys, I value your input. DZ
[This message was edited by Dave Zirbel on 10 January 2002 at 11:57 AM.]

I use the GP-14 for our worship team at church. It has a JBL 12" with the fiddle select which I use for my mandolin. It also has the guitar setting which I have not used too much electric thru, along with the WEBB/steel select in the center position. I think the voicings are very good. It is a much smaller (not too much lighter however) than my 6-14E. I like its versatility for an all around combo amp.

Actually, what Eminence does is, they
make speakers for a whole bunch of
amp companies according to the specs
that each one wants for their particular
amp. The Webb labeled model won't sound
exactly like a Fender speaker. Evans
also uses Eminence to make their speakers,
but then again, they're designed to the
way they them. There's alot
of variables that go into speaker design
that will change the overall character
of the speaker....voice coil size &
material, the voice coil "former"
(what it get's wrapped around), the
kind of paper used for the cone as well
as the thickness etc. The list goes on!
By the way, the Webb speaker is 8 ohm.

I recommend that you try a Peavey Black Widow. We have a complete line of transducers including the Black Widow, Scorpion and Sheffield speakers. Check them out here;http://www.peavey.com/technotes/10.html
