Jamie, I don't have a clue what Paul uses... but I sometimes play a Session 500 with a Profex II, and I just use the three "pedal steel" settings from the program that originally came with the unit.
I connect the fex through the front instrument jack (with reverb off)so I still have my amp controls, and I can easily tweak one or two of those settings to any sound I want. It works well enough for me that I never bothered to load any of the "designer steel pre-set programs" that are currently available. www.genejones.com

Jamie, I don't have the preset that Paul might use, but he has a 5 foot rack full of processing gear and I'm sure that he picks and chooses his sound per recording. But, I do have the Nashville 1000 settings that he used during the jam that was held back in '99 in Nashville, Tennessee. They are as follows;
Paul Franklin -
Amp #1 - Low +9, Mid -6, Shift 500Hz., High +3, Presence -3.
Amp #2 - Low +6, Mid -9, Shift 500Hz., High 0, Presence +3.
Hope that this helps.

Jamie, after Mikes post on the Peavey 1000 settings, my curiosity caused me to check my 500 for my settings and this is what I use:
Low+10,Mid-5,Shift 600Hz,High+3,Pres-0
My files show these Session 500 settings recorded by Peavey at St Louis several years ago:
Lloyd Green:
Low+15,Mid-8,Shift 1200,High+6,Pres+9
Buddy Emmons:
Low+15,Mid-3,Shift 800,High-3,Pres-2
Tommy White:
Low+14,Mid 0,Shift 800,High+3,Pres+5
I also have several other players settings on the Session 500 as noted by the Peavey Sound Crew. About the only conclusion from looking at these settings is that every player without exception re-set almost every control to please his own ears! www.genejones.com

Gene; I missed the line about you going into the front of the 500 on my first read through this thread. I have a friend here in Macon who has been doing that for a long time with a Pro-Fex II and he has a good sound too. I may have made some disparaging comments in another thread about going in the back of a 400 (500). I thought it was a waste of a good full array amp. The changes you use are the way I think the amp should be used and not as a power pack. It's a perfect steel guitar amp judging from the sound as well as the popularity of the units.
Mike: Was the 400 the amplifier Curley Chalker worked with Peavey on ?? I seem to recall something you wrote somewhere about him and Peavey doing that research......
Regards, Paul

The Profex II is a preamp/processor and made to be used with a power amp. The Profex II is capable of line level output.
If you are going to use the Profex II the way it was designed to be used then going into the power amp in on a combo amp is the way to go.
However, many do not use the unit as it was originally designed so there are variations on application.
