Music Man HD130

Post by Tommy Mark »

Just wondered if any of you guys have played thru one of these.I am thinking of buying this.I would be using it for a Tele application . I`m told that they are comparable to a Twin. These are a hybrid amp 1/2 tube (4 power tubes). Any comments?

Thanks............ Tom

I like them for guitar, but I don't care for the tone with steel. At least not mine. It would do if you didn't have anything else, but is not comparable to an Evans, Webb, or Peavey steel amps. Just my opinion. Yours may vary. I own a lot of different amps, always looking for something better, for lead guitar as well as steel, and the best combination I have found that I like for steel as well as guitar is the Peavey Nashville 400 and the Session 500 with the Lemay Modification to them. They sound great with steel and lead guitar. I like my Evans 500 for steel, but not for lead. I like a Fender Twin for lead, but not for steel. I have had the Vibrasonic and it was O.K. for E9, but not for C6.and it is very heavy and a little light on volume without some distortion, especially on very high notes, or very low notes. I like the new Session 2000 for lead guitar very well also. I have had or owned all these different amps. Fender Twin, Vibrasonic, Pro Reverb, Princeton,Super Reverb, Champ and Bandmaster and Ultimate Chorus, and Deville. Peavey Session 500, Session 400LTD, Nashville 400, Nashville 1000, Session 2000,Delta Blues and a couple of the Mark series, and also several PA amps. A Webb, Evans 500Fet, Music Man, and Mesa Boogie, a Polytone and three Crates, and a Carvin. I still own a lot of these, but when I go play, I take the Evans or the Nashville 400 w/Lemay Mod. I don't care for them at all without the modification.
[This message was edited by Fred Murphy on 26 October 2001 at 09:16 AM.]

[This message was edited by Fred Murphy on 26 October 2001 at 09:17 AM.]

[This message was edited by Fred Murphy on 26 October 2001 at 09:47 AM.]

I own two of these. They are both the HD-130 models with 2-12 speakers. One has a tube pre-amp tube section and EVM's (one-thirty in script at the bottom front), and the other has a solid state preamp and JBL's (HD-130 block letters at bottom front). I prefer the tube preamp model, but both are good amps. They are reliable and have good headroom with the right speakers. The stock speakers are not bad, but EVM's or JBL's make a big difference (as with any amp). They are great with a Tele. They have a lot of treble(more than a twin) and I keep mine at 3.5. The reverb and tremolo are good. I have owned mine one since the late seventies and one since the 80's, and have no intentions of selling them.

I've been using a MusicMan with a single 12" ElectroVoice for about 10 years now and I've been fairly happy with the sound. I'm now looking for someting with more power because I'm playing a few bigger venues lately. I'm not sure what the model is of this amp but it packs 100 watts and has a phase shifter built on board also. Tube preamp and solid state power amp. It's served me well and sounds great, but it's time to swap it off for more power and that's the only reason. I just need more power. Ziggie

Ziggy,
Keep your amp, and invest 80.00 in a Shure SM-57 and mic it through the PA. Those are great sounding amps. With a EVM speaker they are hard to beat. My 2 cents.

I have a 115 HD, from about 1980, it puts out 150 watts thru a single 15. It's my 'backup' amp and it's decent.

I have used these, and I bet you will really miss the preamp tubes. Buck
