Alesis Nanoverb

Post by Michael Johnstone »

In an attempt to create a minimalist rig to take on certain gigs w/tiny stages or when I just plain don't feel like schlepping my 5 space 45 pound rack,I've been looking at several mini-digital reverbs that I could throw in my pack-a-seat.I read up on the Alesis unit, and Crate and Zoom also make one - all sell for around a buck&change.I found a used Alesis Nanoverb in a pawn shop yesterday for $50 and I am thrilled. It's about as big as 2 packs of cigerettes side by side and it has stereo in/stereo out so you could feed 2 amps with it.It is not really a simultaneous multi effect unit, but it has several great sounding and tweakable reverb programs,a decent delay,a pretty ok chorus/reverb and it is totally quiet as far as hum or hiss.I just sit it on top of my Nash 400 and pop it into the loop(the one on the back panel of the amp)and Voila! Digital reverb of a very high quality(18 bit). It's basically the same sound I use 90% of the time anyway when I do have my large rack. Travelin' lite -MJ-

You right, MJ. My Nanoverb is cool running also. It sits next to my little home 4-track for making lesson tapes straight to the machine. It's a little noisy, but good enough for the task it's being asked to do.

I bought a used one a few years back.
Can't beat 'em for the price!
There is a bit of a "hiss" along
with the reverb (as Herb sez), but it's
definitely tolerable. It sure is a
heluva lot better quality than the
Boss RV-3 pedals. The decay is much
smoother & more natural sounding.

There may be a bit of noise as far as studio use and I would always use a PCM 70 or better for that. But as far as meeting my signal-to-noise criteria for a gig rig,I found that by using the amp's FX loop and maximizing gain structure each step of the way,my Nano is virtually silent - and is as quiet or quieter than my other rack. This is not the case however, when I put the Nano between the guitar and amp. -MJ-
