Sorry forumites, I think I put an identical post to this one in an inapproprate area.
A fella has an FET 500 wide cabinet Evans amp for sale over in "Buy and Sell" and we're trying to figure out its' vintage. The on/off switch is on the front panel, there is no effects loop, and the mini toggles on the front panel are labeled "bite" and "expand". Also, from the jpeg that I have seen, the front panel is a brown color. The Evans logo is the "script" style of stamped metal. Also, also -- what does the "bite" boost do anyway?
Age of an Evans?

Howdy, The Evans FET-500 amp you are talking about is extremely old. Built by Jim Evans. Phone: (903)838-6098. He can track down when he made it. It didn't happen to be purchased at Hummingbird Misic Studio in Sugarcreek,OH, did it? SER.# 7006? If it is, I had purchased it, but there was a problem with it, it distorted, and was making some weird noises, so he took it back. He had tried to get it fixed, but it still distorted after I brought it home. The amp had Round Knobs- Ground had a 2pos. switch(Round knob), and Expand and Bite, were round knobs with 2pos. switch. It was too bad about the one that I had, I had really liked it. Too bad it couldn't be fixed to quickly. I needed something that I could count on for a long time. Call Jim Evans, he'll help ya, he's a heck of a nice guy!!!!
Thanks. Just curious, Dougie P.S.- It was probably made somewhere between 1970 and 1975. approx.- D.H. _____________________________________________Emmons LeGrande II w/L-710/Evans SE-200/1-BW-1502cab&1EV EVM-12"cab/Alesis Midiverb4/Rocktron Compressor/Limiter/HushII-/Mesa-Boogie Studio Preamp "STEEL ROCKS!!!!"

Thank you Dougie. The amp we're referring to here has a Texas address so it probably did not visit Hummingbird music although Hummingbird (Rick Troyer) is a treasure. In the meantime I have sent off an email inquiry to Darrell Stephens, who built Evans amps through the 80's, to try to get some info. The age of the amp as you suggest in your response may be very cool indeed.
