Brought the ZOOM 1044 back
I did one last comparison today. I recorded a stereo song from my ZOOM PS-02 into the ZOOM MRS1044. I recorded the identical song into my Tascam 238. Except for the tape hiss the 238 sounds better. It's warmer and fuller, especially for vocals. I tried all the master effects on the 1044 to warm it up, but it would not "fatten" it up. So now my rig is ZOOM PS-02 as preamp/effect into the Tascam 238. And then i use my Boss TM-7 for bass. I'm happy i made this decision, save me $750 too! One other good thing is i can record into the PS-02 and out into the Tascam at the same time. So, i can still archive the tracks on computer as .wav. Best of both worlds on a budget. I looked in eBay and the Tascam 238's are going for $250-300. Well, it sounds better than digital at 1/3 of the going price.
I posted this for the benefit of anyone looking to buy a home recorder. If you don't care about cut and paste or don't mind some tape hiss, you can get a great deal on 8-track cassette recorders today.
