Lloyd Green's delay setting

Post by Larry Behm »

Does anyone know first hand what settings he uses. I heard him on the WKRP broadcast last week end, sounded like 300-350 ms with about 3 delays. BIG!!

Larry; I say the time delay is about right on the money and I heard those repeats as well. I have sometimes been accused of using to many and Have held them back for years. But when I heard Lloyd on friday before I went to my gig, I knew what I was going to do !! My feedback went from 17% to 35%. That made Sleep Walk sound soo much better. Now if I could just get the chimes to sound like his do on the chorus !! Yeah, sure !! I know....That's why he is in Nashville and I'm in....... Where the H - - -
am I anyway ??

Larry and Paul, I didnt get to hear lloyd but he must have been great from all the reports..

Sounds like I am running a bit weak on my setting also..

I run 250ms with 1 repeat [ 0 feedback] and about 17 to 20% on the mix..This is with a profex or tubefex..

Any suggestions for settings that sound more like lloyd? Image

Jerry; I'm using a Jeff Peterson setting on a Tube-Fex. Bring your FDBK % up until you hear the decaying repeat chain. 0% gives you just the repeat and not the chain that follows a normal echo. Bring it up to where you hear the chain but don't overdo it. Then set your mix for the sound you want. If you are using a single amp it will take one mix setting while a stereo setup would be something else. If you're using a two amp configuration, try to get your position at the front point of an equilateral triangle
and the speakers will be the other two points behind you. Sometimes the stage will demand a different spacing between you and the amps but you'll be able to find it.

Lloyd is using a Boss RV-3. He sets it on position 7 with, from left to right, about 8 O'clock, 11 O'clock and one O'clock. There's the "secret" settings!!! Image

Mike, A mutual friend of mine and Bobbe was at the store a few weeks back and all I've heard since is about how good Bobbe was sounding in the shop and on stage with an RV-3. I've got a couple dozen delay types in my TF so I can't use one right now. I think I'll get one for Frank and then maybe he'll chill out !! Image

Mike has it folks. I also talked to Lloyd last weekend at the show and he literally showed me exactly how his Boss RV-3 was set:
Setting #7 which is plate 'verb + delay
Mix was pretty low like 7:30/8:00
Feedback was set at 11:00
Delay Time was set at 1:00

The mix knob is the key so the repeats aren't too obvious. He also set the Peavey Nashville 1000's on stage at:
Bass +6
Midrange frequency around 800Hz
Midrange cut about -6/-8dB
Treble flat
Presence flat
Pickup Bill Lawrence 710

What a tone!!!

Lloyd's unique style is one of the elite few that is readily recognizable.

So let me get this straight...

Y'all think that if you use the same settings, and the same equipment, as Lloyd...y'all will sound just like him?!?

(I could be wrong...but I don't think it works that way.) Image

Thanks Brad....I keep one of those things in my bag in case my Profex dies on the gig (which has happened more than once Image )
I think I'll go glue the knobs in the right place right now.

Lloyds delay setting is so long that when folks dance to his playing,he's half way home from the job before they quit dancing.
Seriously, I sold him a Boss RV-3 and told him how to set it and I'll tell all of the rest of you if you'd like. Lloyd will be in the store tomorrow and we'll get him on this thread to conferm that he is still doing what I suggested. He did tell me on the phone today that he won't ever play without the RV-3 again. He claims it gives him the best tone he has ever gotten.I understand where he's coming from. Most players in this town use this unit an feel the same way.
Thanks Mike and Buddy for introducing me to this unit 6 years ago.

By the way,(commercial time) I sell these units at a great discounts, and always have them in stock. Just thought someone might want to know, trying to do the community a service. www.steelguitar.net
Might even cut forum members a special deal! Lloyd just called, I told him what I was doing, he said to tell all of you hello and he will be getting a computer soon and is looking forward to being "on line" . I said, "it's about time LDG!". Hear more from him tomorrow.

Yes Bobbe...since I bought my RV-3 pedal from you also ( and because of your great in-store demo ), I'd very much like to know how you set it!!!

Do you use different settings for fast songs, slow songs, just delay, just reverb, both?

enquiring minds want to...yada yada yada

That's some of the best news I've seen on the forum in a long time. Although I have tremendous respect and admiration for ALL the greats, Lloyd has always been my personal "hero" when it comes to pedal steel. So far, my biggest regret regarding steel, is that although I've heard him play live, I've never actually got to visit with him and just talk a while.

Thanks for that info, Bobbe.

Lloyd Green is here now, and says the minor variances that have been posted in his delay setting don't make any differance on the two center controls. Just make sure control #4 is on box #7. He finds all these posts very interesting and is glad that everyone still remembers who he is ( is he kidding or what?). He said to repeat what he said earlier, that he never wants to ever play again with out this great little device (Boss RV-3).

Bobbe
It was very nice to see you at the convention. You have got to be the best Emmons P/P man in the country. What is your setting for the delay and if you use the reverb & delay setting, do you make any changes on the reverb on the amp
OH, by the way, please do not change your Webb site.
Thanks
Billy

Hey guys, pardon my ignorance. Is the RV 3 unit a stomp box or rack mount? I've been using a Boss DD5 stomp box for several years. It's tap tempo delay feature is a real plus. RV3 have that feature? I've been pretty happy with the DD5 but you never miss something better till you've tried it. RV3 have superior tone?? you tellin me i have to buy another toy now???(what kinda bucks we talkin about?)

Steve, the RV-3 is a DELAY/REVERB stomp box unit. You can use both delay and reverb simultaneously. It's all I use. The price is around $180.oo-$200.oo Image Larry
