D-130 in original Session amps, wattage???
In the old Peavey Session 400, what was the wattage on those original JBLs? I know it was unusual but cannot remember if it was 8 watts or 4 watts.
Anyone remember???

Tom,I think you have watts and ohms confused..I beleave the impedence on those was 4 ohms..As far as the wattage {power handleing capability},it probably is somewhere between 100 and 150 watts..

It wasn't a D-130 it was a K-130 (like the ones Fender was using earlier in the Vibrasonic). I believe that the power handling capacity was supposed to be 200 watts, but in fact these used to blow all the time, the reason for developing the Black Widow.

I still have a session 400 that I bought in 1974. That year(which I think was the first year for the session 400) came with a 15" JBL or the optional two 12" EVs. The JBL had the gray colored frame and magnet. Wasn't this the D series? And the Ks following shortly thereafter? I blew two of the gray 15s before going to the black (K-130?).

I remember my first Session (and I had the very first Session 400 in CA, bought at Don Wehr's Music City in SF) had a JBL that was marked in a special way for the amp (don't think it had a model number), but I always assumed it was a K-130, since the D-130 wasn't in production at the time.
Now the Session 400 with two EVs was a very sweet amp. A friend replaced one of the EVs with a JBL K-120, and it sounded great. But very heavy.

The D130F had a grey frame. One of the major differences between it and the K130 with the black frame was the cone. The D130F had a paper cone and the paper went all the way out to the frame. The K130 has a cone with a cloth edge, not unlike the E130. The E130, of course has the massive ceramic magnet which allows the speaker to handle around 300 watts.
The D130 had a narrower voice coil gap than the D130F which made it tremendously efficient but the coil was wound with fine wire. It was only rated at 25 watts but would blow you down. The voice coil on all the 130s is only 1/4 inch high but is approximately 4 inches in diameter. In order to use bigger wire to increase the power handling capacity, they use FLAT wire wound on it's edge to get the same number of turns in the 1/4 inch high area.

If I am not mistaken, the D 130 has an alnico
magnet, giving it a particular tone. I use this speaker in my vibrosonic. I prefer it's sound, but have just had to have it reconed.
If you use e-130 voice coil on a recone it will supposedly last longer. We will see. I will only spend this kind of money one time before switching to a more dependable speaker. The bottom end of this speaker is truly awesome. Wattage was, indeed, only 25w. Which is surprising when you hear one. Buck
