very portable effects+pre-amp stuff needed

Hi gang!
In the best conditions at home, I can take all my gear, stereo-set, boogiepre-amp, gp100, and have all the opportuneties to get a sound on stage and in the studio to die for.
But hauling around this stuff in a plain doesn't work well, I noticed

I need an effectdevice, that I can take in my steelcase, or handbag, and go direct out to the main board, and I can hear myself trough the monitor. It should be a replacement for my GP 100.
Would that POD, kidney thing , or the Behringer copy of it do the job? Or a Pandora? I need to go direct, have had enough experiences on keyboard amps or marshall stacks... esspecially in the eastblock or spain the stages are not provided with good amps, and all the overweightcosts, brr...
Please, some advises,

Well, you've got a bunch of choices out
there these days: Johnson J Station,
Yamaha DG Stomp, the new Boss unit,
& Digitech has one also.
It's just a case of which
can handle the "hotter" steel signal the
best without breaking up. The POD will
work, but according to Jeff Petersen, you
have to access the settings inside the
thing (thru midi, I guess) to decrease the
gain on the input in order to clean up the sound a little.

I think the POD would be the smallest, cheapest and easiest solution. You might need some time to get aquainted with all the different amp-models and stuff. The Behringer V-amp had some very bad reviews in germany lately, like every guitar sounds the same through it and no dynamics and so on. If you need a POD and can't find one (Vs 2.2!!!) I'd lend mine to you for some time.

BTW, I work for ulfTone music and had finally a chance to hear you play on the Norin Radd-album. Man, you are great! I hope to see you perform live one day.

Johan, the little (half rack space) Boss VF-1 is the replacement for everything in your rack except the Boogie preamp, it has the same COSM amp models, plus the efx sound better than the GP-100 (IMHO), especially the reverbs. The VF-1 has the same limitations that the GP-100 in terms of rock and roll sounds: the distorted sounds are great for extreme settings, but can't give mildly overdriven sounds. The POD has more realistic amp models for going direct to the board but the efx suck. But the good news is that you could put a POD plus the VF-1 in a gig bag, and it would still cost less than $600 (in the US at least).
