Recording gear

I'm looking at project studio gear, in particular the Yamaha AW4416 recorder. I'd like to hear any comments on that unit. Also, monitors; what price level do you need to get to for good working tools? I would like to avoid making most of the rookie mistakes. (This is a personal project studio, no commercial plans, but do want to be able to do work I can be proud of.) Thanks!

Why dispense with the hardware approach and go with a computer setup? Check out www.iqsoft.com and check out the SAW program. It is the most amazing piece of software I have ever seen and have been using their products for years. As far as monitors are concerned that it a very subjective call. I have a pair of Yamaha NS-10. Not the best sounding speaker on the planet but if you get your mix sounding good on these, it will sound good on any type of speakers you use. Most studios seem to use these as a type of reference standard for this reason.

If I had to do it over again, I would buy the Yamaha AW4416, and a set of powered monitors like the Tanoy, Rok or ?

You'll still have money left over to buy nice mic's, pre's, ect.

I have a real nice project studio and a empty pocket book! If your not going to rent out your studio, go for a small, one man operation.

Oh by the way, go for the CD recorder option as well.

Hey there!! I've got a 4416. It thrills me as much as it frustrates me. I learned recording on analog consoles so I get a little lost in screens and tabs, multi-function faders, knobs and buttons, multi-function in/outs. But hey, I'm learning. It has limitations, but in my opinion, it's a great piece of gear, especially with the burner.

There's a users' forum you can check out to get opinions from owners. Praise and criticism...should help you make a decision.
