Recommendations on a digital recorder

Post by Larry Beck »

Does anyone have experience / opinions on a digital recorder? I'm open to anything from a rackmount Roland VSR-880 to a portasound 788.

Larry;

After about a year or two of looking at/thinking about all the choices (Roland, Korg, Fostex, Yamaha MD etc.) I've had a Tascam 788 for about a week - I've got a lot to learn (it's been about 10 years since I took a multitrack recording course at community college) but I'm pretty impressed so far.

Also, a nice aspect of this unit is the 788 User Forum that Tascam maintains here:

http://www.tascambbs.com/cgi-bin/ubb cgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=788%2BDigital%2BPortastudio&number=13&DaysPrune=10&LastLogin=

It's an invaluable resource Image

We just got a Fostex VF16. It is a hard drive recorder with 8 "real" tracks and 16 virtual tracks. For the price, it seemed to be the most bang for the buck. I've checked some of the reviews and couldn't find anything bad about it. It's about the same size as a Tascam 424MKIII 4 track cassette recorder.

I've got a Roland VS-880 (non-rack) model that I like quite well.

I can highly recommend the Roland VS recorders. I started on the VS-880 V-Expanded and I now own a VS-1880. The effects are worth the price of the recorder. The mic modeling algorithms are unbelievable. And the 1880 has mastering capabilities and you can burn CDs with the optional CD. You can also use the CD to backup data. I'll be glad to answer any specific questions if you want to e-mail me.

I have a Roland VS 1680, works fine, they even have a newer model out with more tracks. Very good quality and the reverb and other effects work well in the final product.

I use a Roland VS-880 (the original) to record my "Diatonic Adventures" CD. It's a real good recorder. I have no complaints.

There's a web site for VS users that includes a forum. It's at www.vsplanet.com

Here's a link to a comparison between the Tascam and the Roland line of digital multiracks; some food for thought.

I also have a Roland VS-880 EX
I've had no problems with it.

Thanks all for your help & input. Lots of good features to consider along with the relative thinness of my wallet.

Another vote for the Roland VS series, I have a VS-1680 that I like a lot. The vsplanet site b0b mentions is a big help.
