Drum Machine

Post by Kevin Holmes »

There used to be a real cheap drum machine made by Korg that was about one step above a metronome. A half a dozen or so rhythms and a tempo control. It was cheezy, but it kept you on beat when you were playing by yourself. Twenty years ago it was around thirty bucks.

Now, I can't seem to find anything under 170.00. Does anybody know if anybody makes anything low-end, or am I better of looking for something used?

Look for a used Alesis SR16 drum machine. They are the best thing on the market for the money. Used ones are in the $100 to $125 range. There's enough factory programs to do almost anything, except a 3/4 waltz beat. You'll have to program that, but the programming is easy on this unit too.

I know several one man/two man acts that use the Alesis SR16 in their acts.

There are a number of guitar effect
boxes that have drum and bass lines
included. The Korg Pandora is one. I
think Digitech also makes a few, and ZOOM. These are under $200. You just need to send the output to a mixer or amp of some sort.

Just looked at the latest catalog from American Musical Supply. You can buy a ZOOM 123 RhythmTrak for $150 new. You get drum patterns and basslines. It's got a line in for jamming with other instruments (your steel?), headphone out, assign patterns to pads for quick change. Of course, you can also program whole songs. Sounds like a winner for you!
