The club owner, where I pick, just bought a Fostex VF16 multi-track recorder. He gave it to me to learn how to operate. It seems like nice unit for a "portastudio" type unit. It is 8 tracks (the ad hype says 16 but is's only 8 tracks at a time) and has a built in IDE hard drive.
I've played with it a little, but I'm in the process of moving and don't have a lot of time right now.
Anyone have any experiece with this thing. Any tricks to using it, etc??

That's a nice unit. Haven't used it though. I'm starting to be sold on digital. I can deal with the somewhat sterile sound in exchange for fast recording access. Plus digital recorders are light weight and take up little space.
Zoom is coming out with a table top 10 track with built-in programmable drum machine and bass track. It's gonna be around $600. It's just incredible how technology has advanced. I remember 10 years ago with Roland's first commercially available 8 track digital recorder. I think it was around $4,000, maybe more. Now i can record a decent sounding demo on a $280 pocket Zoom.

I have one of these (so do the Campbell Brothers, it was used to record much of their new live CD). You can buy a 30 or 40 gig hard disc (easy to install) for $150 or less which increases it's usefullness. Also, you can record 16 channels at once, but you need a digital mixer or other interface with an ADAT optical connection.
I love it!
