Evan's amp extesion speaker

Post by Len Amaral »

The Evan's SE-200 has a 4-ohm speaker and the amp also has an extension speaker jack. I assume you can use another 4ohm speaker for the extension? This will drop the amp output to 2 ohms. Will the amp run hot or should the extension speaker be 8 ohms? Any thoughts?

In most all cases, the extension speaker should be rated the same as the one(s) in the amp. If you use a higher impedance, it's a little easier on the amp, but the volume levels won't match. Bear in mind that the ambient temperature figures in as well. Overloading a tube amp won't cause a problem for a while, but overloading a transistor amp might cause damage very quickly. Obviously, any amp will run cooler, and take more abuse in a 70-degree room than it will playing outside in the sun on a hot day.

I don't know if it will hurt it or not, but I have been using one here at the house for about two months now and everything seems O.K. I am using a Peavey 1501-4. This is with a 500FET.
[This message was edited by Fred Murphy on 31 May 2001 at 10:46 AM.]

Hi Fred & Donny:
Thanks for your response concerning my question about the extension speaker.

I also have an Evans FET 500 LV. I have used a peavey black widow with mine as an extension speaker. The only problem was the Black Widow is apparently a more efficient speaker as it was about 1/2 again louder than the Evans speaker. I installed an L-Pad volume control and the problem was solved. The amp has never overheated or had a problem from using the Black Widow.

There is no noticable difference in volume between mine. I am using an open back extension speaker, maybe that is the difference.

Len,
I too have an SE-200 with a JBL D-130 4 ohm. I called Ed Buffington from Evans about adding an extension speaker cabinet and he told me I could use a 4 ohm speaker but if I ran it on high volumes it would need a fan to keep it cool. He suggested I use an 8 ohm to be safe. So the extension speaker is an 8 ohm JBL. He also said to plug the cable in the speaker cabinet first before plugging into the amp. Sounds great.
