Beginner question about ProFex II
I'm a beginner so don't beat me up too bad, but I've seen various postings about this thing called ProFex II.
1) What is it?
2) What is it used for?
3) How is it used with an existing amp?
Thanx for the help.

Bill, the Profex II is a preamp/effects processor. They were replaced by the newer Transtube Fex/Tube Fex in approx 95 or 96 (the Transtube Fex/Tube Fex units have just recently been discontinued by Peavey too).
Most that have a Profex II are using the steel programs that were originally set up by Jeff Newman.
You can go to the Peavey web site and download a copy of the Profex II manual.

I have a Transtube Fex, which is not as noisy as a TubeFex, and I use a noise gate as the last parameter in the string and it quiets it right down and doesn't interfere with sustain, etc. My programs are in the latest PSGA Newsletter and on my web page. http://tampabaydsl.com/~jestoner
I found the Profex II to be noisy, at the least the one I had, and I could never come up with a sound to suit me.

Depending on how the Profex II is connected in the signal chain can deem it noisey or not noisey. I've found that quite a few players connect the Profex/Profex II between the output of their volume pedal and the input of the amp. This is incorrect. The reason being is that the Profex is a preamplifier and the Nashville/Session etc. amp also has a preamp in it. This would double the noise level depending on the settings.
The proper way to connect it is to connect the output of the Profex II into the POWER AMP IN on the back panel of the amp. The noise level will also depend on how many effects that are programmed into the chain.
