Hilton pedal

Post by Chuck Lawson »

Would anyone know the polarity of the 9 volt power sup.The one that came with the pedal does not show if the tip is a + or - .I don;t want to plug in the wrong one. This power sup is just an extra one as a backup.
Thanks Chuck.

Hi Chuck.. I have a Hilton also. On the back of my power supply (adapter) is a small diagram depicting the + and -
If it's the same brand as mine, it will be there. Check it out.

Thanks Dennis but the power supply that came with my pedal does not have the + or - sign anywhere on the supply. This is the first one I have seen that doesn;t have that on it.

Chuck-- Take the adapter in to Radio Shack or wherever. If you don't have a volt meter, I'll bet they would check it for you.

Usually the outer barrel is the positive and the inner is negative. But best to try a meter on it first.

I just bought a replacement AC adapter from Radio Shack using the model number that Keith gave me. He told me to hook "plus to plus". I connected the "plus to tip" and it worked fine.

Sorry I havn't responded sooner. I was on a trip playing the big steel guitar show in Siloam Springs, Arkansas with John Hughey,Joe Wright and others. Let me see if I can help you with your power adpater question. Chuck, all pedals we shipped to Canada had a 12 volt DC power supply, tip plus. Most of the power supplies we have used have been 12voltDC, although we did use a very small number of 9 voltAC power supplies. All the 9 volt power supplies were AC to AC. That is 120VAC to 9VAC. With a AC adapter, it doesn't matter if the tip is plus ,or minus, but it would have to have at least 500mA current rating. Tip size would be 5.5 X 2.5MM Now for the 120VAC to 12VDC adapters. For the 120VAC to 12VDC adapters,Radio Shack has a replacement; part number 273-1773
With that part number, get the tip size 5.5 X 2.5MM. You can also purchase replacement power supplies from us,if you don't want to go to Radio Shack. For the 12VDC adapters, we did use a plus tip, but it really doesn't matter. We have a rectifier inside and a negative tip will also work. Since late last year all new pedals have the power supply cord permanently attached. That eliminates any confusion of which power supply to plug in. If you need further assistance with your pedal e-mail me, or call me on the telephone at 417-334-6487. I want to thank everyone for their answers to my problem.Keith the one that I have is the one you sent me with the 9 volt adapter.I went to Radio Shack and picked one up but this one can be used either + or -. I didnt want to plug it in wrong but I see it wouldn;t hurt either way .
Thank you Chuck.

Chuck, don't worry, you won't hurt anything. I designed these pedals where just about anything could be plugged in, and it would not hurt anything. It might not work if the wrong thing is plugged in, but it won't hurt the pedal. I had to do this, because musicians have a lot of different adapters and get them mixed up. I sure did not remember sending any 9VAC pedals to Canada, but maybe I did. I have sent a lot of 12 volt DC pedals to Canada. Your pedal still has a guarantee, so if you plug the wrong thing in,and it hurts something ,I'll fix it for you free. So there is nothing to worry about Chuck.
Just remember these things: If you get a 9 volt AC adapter, make sure it has at least 500mA currentm rating. More current is OK. For example a 1000mA current rating is OK. I'm almost certain the tip is 5.5 X 2.5mm. It is possible that it could be a 5.5 X 2.1mm tip, as we did use a few of those sizes. Everyone one of the 9 volt transformers I sent out had a label on them that said "Jameco". The output was printed on the label--9VAC at 500mA. I can't understand why the label is missing from your transformer, as these labels are almost impossible to get off. In the tests we did on these transformers we couln't peal the label off.

I believe the standard on just about ANYTHING is that the tip is positive.

Everything EXCEPT the radio control transmitters made by JR. Why THEY have to be different, I'll never understand.

That being said, it's always best to err on the side of caution, and ask or measure.

There is no "standard" on the small wall wart power supplies. I have as many with the center conductor negative as I do positive.

My Hilton is either hard wired or has a screw on connection. I believe I would convert to this system If I were you. I would not invest in an inferior wall wart. The new pedal has a very large and well made chord and wouldn't damage too easily.

I take it back then. Last time I'll listen to those know-it-alls at the R/C club. Image
