Well since I work sound at St. Louis and worked the stage sound at the June Jams, I have been fortunate enough to set up equipment for many of the greats.
In Jimmy's last years, he used a Webb amplifer and plugged direct. He did not use any effects with the Webb.
And yes he got a great sound..

I was lucky enough to see Jimmy at the British Steel Guitar Festival in 1995, at that time he was playing a Mullen, and was virtually forced to play through a PRO-Fex, (House setup,). He did not like it one bit, His actual words were "I dont like this S*&*
get me an Evans." I must add, of all the "Steelies" I have seen at Newbury, (and a lot of them are favourites of mine,) e.g. Doug Jernigan, Jimmy Crawford, Russ hicks, I have to say Jimmy is still my absolute No1. Looking back on his playing it is so full of "SOUL", He could even play play "Bum Notes" and make them sound intentional, (though he rarely played a bum note.) In case you are wondering why I haven't mentioned Buddy Emmons, well of course he is one of my favourites aswell, but so far I haven't been fortunate enough to see him live. In a couple of weeks time I am going to this years festival to see another fantastic "Steelie" that I have never seen live before, that is Herby Wallace.
Cheers,
Dave.
