? about Standell speakers

Does anyone know who made speakers for Standell? I know of a Standell "Acoustic Magnifier" with a closed back cabinet. It looks like a powered speaker box. No instrument inputs or volume /tone controls, just a power cord and some 1/4" jacks. I would like to know whats inside.

I worked on some Standel powered PA speaker columns once for Porter Waggoner. They had a small power amp in them that was fed from the mixer board. They had two power output transistors in them of the 2N3055 variety. I would guess about 30 watts or so.

I don't recall what kind of speakers were in them.

I have a '59 Standell that has the orig JBL D-130. This is the one where the paper goes out to the edge and the ring clearance is .050. After Leo Fender convinced JBL to increase the clearance to .062, because Dick Dale was blowing them too easily, Bob Crooks complained that they didn't sound the same.

This thing is a little larger than a Fender Twin. I'm thinking it has a pair of speakers. It's not a PA column. Maybe I'll ask to open it up and see if there are any nice surprises in there! Dave

do you have some schematics for Standels ??? I have a couple of tube amps and I like to learn more about them...what model is yours? 50L15 ???

Funny you should ask, I had a Standel Imperial XV and before I sold it, I exchanged the speaker and still have the original JBL D130 16 ohm in my garage, Gary

I almost forgot that before I bought the Imperial XV with the JBL 15, I had a Piggyback Standel with a 12" JBL that went to Gene Breeden at the time and we bought them both through Irby Mandrell(Barbs dad) who was the sales rep for Standel in 1961 or so. Therefore most of the Standels had JBLs of that era, Gary

I have a brochure ca. 1958 or 59...only the higher rated models were equipped with Lansing speakers...most of the amps had 12" or 15" Jensens..
Gary, is your speaker a D130 or D130F? There's quite a difference in these models!

I was told that the "F" indicated models made for Fender???

Dave, I was working for a Standel dealer about the time that they had the acoustic magifier models in their line. The idea of the acoustic magnifier was to not only multiply the amount of speaker coverage but to increase the audio power as well. They were like slave amps. You could daisy chain as many as you needed. Also about this time they went from JBLs in their top line amps to a speaker they had made by a company called Trusonic that we found to be as rugged and as good sounding as a Lansing speaker. I was using a Vox Super Beatle with two cabinets loaded with Standel Speakers-thank God I still have good hearing!!! If my memory serves me they were known as the SS series. Check and see if the cabinet has those or the S speakers which were, I think, Jensens.
And Jack you're right the F is for Fender. The story I heard was that Dick Dale was using JBL D-130 Hi Fi speakers and ripping the cones from the surrounds. Fender worked with JBL to come up with a speaker that had a rubberized surround to avoid this- thus the D-110F,D120F,etc.
