Amp advice

Post by Bill Atwood »

I am looking to upgrade from a 10" solid state with the idea of improving my sound.Yesterday, while on the way to watch South Western Missouri State eliminate the Duke girls from the "Sweet Sixteen", I went pawn shop shopping. I found a somewhat road worn Peavey tube amp. The only designation on the grill was "Classic". Checking the Peavey webb site it appears to be a "50-212".
At this point, I have no need for a high power blaster.
Would this be a good amp for steel?
How much is it really worth?

The amp you mention is not designed for steel. However, there are some "guitar" amps that work well in low power situations. The best thing is to try it on your steel.

Thanks Jack. You helped me avoid another regrettable purchase. Are any of the Fender Amps designed for steel?

There are a lot of Fender "guitar" amps that people are using for steel. Do a search or browse through the electronics section for the last couple of weeks. There have been many posts on amps and specifically Fender amps.

Another alternative is a Peavey Session 400 or Nashville 400 amp (the Nashville is in a smaller cabinet). Although they are bigger, they are designed for steel. I've seen used ones advertised for under $300.

The Fender Stage 112SE does a good job on steel, and is a nice size. Good used ones are about $275.(Reverb isn't great, though, so you may want to use a stomp-box delay.)

Just for your information, the Peavey Classic 50/212 is the amp that Curly Chalker chose to perform with prior to his passing. Must be in the hands.....................
