Speaker repair

I have a Lansing speaker that has the "wire" that connects the voice coil to the lug broken. It is the section of wire that goes from the back of the cone to the lug that the speaker lead wire connects to. It is some very flexible material much like used in a coiled guitar lead cord. Seems to have more nylon or something than it does copper. I have managed to solder a length of wire to it and for now the speaker sounds great but I am sure the solder is just barely holding so I am afraid to trust it. How can I repair it where it will stay?

Jerry, That's called a "spider" wire....I think I have a couple around here - if U email me your address I'll throw one in the snail mail for u, or if u have a re-cone shop close by they can put one on for u--shouldn't cost much. (The spider-2 of 'em- go from the speaker lug(s) to a small metal grommet in the cone where it's soldered along with the very thin wire coming from the voice coil. That voice coil wire is usually covered with a black cement.

The wire from the terminal to the cone is also called a "tinsel" wire. The nylon in the middle of the braided wire is for strength.

Jerry

If the wire is just barely holding by the
solder joint alone, you can always build
up all around it with Silicon cement which
when it hardens will still remain flexable.
It will add support & keep the connection
from coming apart.

Thanks for the help men. I did not know how the wires connected in the cone because of the black sealer or adhesive. Cairo, I would be greatful if you don't mind to send a wire to 1113 South 21, Fort Smith, Ar 72901. I owe a lot of you guys a lot of favors and I will add you to the list. Jay, thanks for the idea to reinforce the fragile solder joint. I will try that until I get around to replacing the wire.

Matt, You are absolutely correct in that the braid is called "tinsel"! Now, I KNOW I had a roll of it..or at least a few pieces... somewhere in this mess...Just haven't been able to find it yet. Jerry-I'm sending ya an "Email" and I apologize for the delay..Hope to have it in Saturdays' mail...Cz

Cairo, don't go to a lot of trouble, just keep it in mind if you run across it. I have reinforced the splice and think it will hold up for quite a while. If you find the wire and send it I will change it but until then I believe it will work fine. I would like advice on how to get the grommet cleaned off where I can solder the new wire to it.
