A good cleaner for pots?

Amplifiers, effects, pickups, electronic components, wiring, etc.

A good cleaner for pots?

Post by Mark Herrick »

What is a good cleaner to use on the pots of a Nashville 400? I have an older model that sounds like it could use a squirt or two.

I was told to be careful which cleaner I used, depending on whether the pots are wire wound or carbon.

Any advice?

Mark, John LeMay, who works on Peavey amps reccommended De-oxit D-5. It is a bit more $ than most but it really works good. I've used it on everything. Dave

Good advice on the Deoxit D5. Keep it around the studio all the time. Bought Webb amp and all the pots were scratchy, hit each one with deoxit and have had no problems going on 4 years now. Made by company called CAIG........great stuff, comes in aerosol can for about $12-$14 but well worth it.

I know MARS music carries it and I think Sam Ash does too. Probably some of the other music stores also carry it. I think it's about $10 or $12 for a relatively small spray can. But all electronic chemical sprays went up in price about 7 or 8 years ago because of the propellent in them and EPA.

Believe it or not. Quite a few years back
when I bought a Goodrich volume pedal and had it for a while, it developed a couple of little irritating scratches [my place gets
real dusty, real quick].

So I started re-reading the literature that came with the volume pedal, and Goodrich
says the way to eliminate 'scratching'
was simply to go up and down [or low to high]
about 50-60 times....back and forth, back and forth.......and this should take care of it.
And it did. They may have recommended, also,
NOT using a lubricant on the pot [I'm not 100% on this point, tho].

You can also use brake clean found in any auto supply store. It is the same as the electrical cleaner- and half the price.

Careful with the brake-clean! A friend used some (made by CRC) on one of my pedals, and it took the finish off!!! This is NOT a friendly product for plastic or painted surfaces.

KRYLON (yes paints) makes a good a spray that is a cleaner and also provides a small amount of lubricant when finished degreasing. It comes in a red/white & black can. Good Stuff!

I use Powr-Wash by Chemtronics in my shop to clean pots. kinda expensive, but is by far the best I've used.
