Help from 400 owners about into 4 track--

I am trying to lay a steel sound track into a FostexX-18 4 track from a Nashville 400 and am getting a distortion even though the lights don't show it on the 4-track. I am coming out of the patch out of the 400 is that the wrong way ? Should I mic it maybe ? Thanks Bill Myrick

Bill, sounds like you are overdriving the input on the fourtrack. You are going into a preamp with a line level and it is just too hot. Try to back the amp way down and listen to it through your monitors. If that don't clean it up you will prabably have to mike it. Good luck.

I did a partial session using the Preamp Out on my Nashville 400 and it didn't cause any problems. However, I went from the preamp out to a D.I. box (changed to Low Impedence to the board). They were using a 4 track Yamaha recorder on that session.

I have a 4 track Tascam 424MKII and it is designed to accept a line level signal (XLR) or high impedence, low level signal with a standard 1/4" jack. It has a level control on the input and then it has more level control with the slider level control for the input channel.

What kind of tape are you using?? Most of the recorders require High Bias Type II tape such as TDK-SA or Maxell XKII. If you're using a lesser grade tape it could cause overloading problems.

Bill,I am having a similar problem, a slight
distortion, try going into to something first
like a delay of some sort. I have BL705
pickups which are strong, and I think the
preamp is getting overloaded or mismatched.
I went into my Profex and it was gone, I also tried my Roland 1000 Delay and it was gone. Both units have input levels. Greg
