Why not? Who says that Country music has to come from Nashville?..Was it born there?..Are all the artist and Musicians from there?....If so please name them...I am sure there are a few however how many are actually involved in the mainstream now?...So I propose lets call the new modern stuff out of Nashville,"New Nashville Music",and only call Country music what is truly Country Music..This should not offend the supporters of the "New" who don't wish to be supporters of the "old". Steel Guitars would be accepted in both but wanted mostly in the latter. And when saying your "Country" is cool again they could just come on back.

I would assume that what most of you desire is for more of the "old stuff" to actually be PLAYED on the radio. Giving the "new stuff" a different name won't help one bit with that.
PS -- I kinda prefer that music should be divided into only two categories: "Music Dave likes", and "Music Dave doesn't like". And, all radio stations should, of course, only be "Music Dave likes" stations.
How about basing it in Bakersfield! It worked there once. Keep the parasitic "suits" and shmoozing freeloader wheeler-dealers out of the process. A community, heart & soul, "A Telecaster, Three Chords, and a Story".
But...there has to be viable MARKETING and a market to succeed. Isn't that the weak link that's messing up a healthy country music scene? They can sell all that other swill to someone. Good music is salable, but I guess there's more $$ right now in $will.
I Think its a great idea, but you know what's gonna happen. The NEW CRAP is gonna find it's way to being called real country. As long as people gettin stupider, the less I even bother

Abraham - D-7 string lap steel, standel amp, George L bar, 2 finger picks and 1 thumb, soon to have a pedal steel and probably a Peavey session 400 or Nashville 400.
Many people still relate the steel guitar with country music. So if it has steel in it, it must be country. If we could break that misconception maybe they could move ahead and call the pop/rock stuff something else and we would have the traditional country back.
And it would be able to expand the steel guitar's role in any form of music.
I know we re-hash this over and over again, only because a lot of us remember when Nashville was the Country Music land of opertunity..However music has never been the #1 Industry in old Nashboro..Now It's even lower on the ladder thanks to the efforts of Sir Gaylord and crew..For those who say the Opry will survive with the new direction the music is going I say B.S...Opinions may vary but the proof is still in the pudding...It's a good thing they built a bigger Hall Of Fame ,they can still turn it into a museum..Anyway I always thought Bakersfield was the true home of Country music..
I have NO idea whether the "Opry" will survive or not.
I feel certtain that if it does, it will not be because of country music as most of us love. One thing is for sure, the music many of us so dearly hold in passion will NEVER come back, IMHO. Too few like it. Outside this forum, and a scant scattering of folks, almost no one likes it anymore. Sad indeed.
And as such, whatever music is played on the "future Opry", it will not even be a semblance of what many of wish it still was.
Carl, I don't know where you got the information "to few like it out side the forum...Florida's Rock Crusher Canyon which brings in the likes of Loretta Lynn George Jones has turn away crowds. The Plant City Strawberry Festival which brings in numerous traditional acts is over-crowded. The Tampa bases fl. State fair packs em in with an Opry Package show..There are plenty of traditional Country music people out there...And these are the same people that fill the Opry seats each weekends..I agree the Opry needs a shot in the arm,not a kick in the ass....All one has to do is visit a place called CAtfish Johnnies on a wed at 12 noon until? You will see a place packed to the rafters. (they pay a small door)And guess what they are getting 100% pure Country music...Many People still love the traditional Country music ,they can't get it..I can like some of the newer stuff but I want it to be my choice to pick and choose.. not because they are eliminating what I do like..I have never lowered my head when someone asked me what kind of music I liked..As I have said before there are really only two kinds of music..Good or Bad..And anything that has lasted 75 years can't be all that bad.. I wonder if all the present members were suddenly gone, would the new regime carry on for the next 75 years..Not for what the same money as the loyal members recieved for the past 75 years...The Opry has survived because of a good income and limited budget...They all got paid weekly, very weakly..how does one put a price on loyalty?

One correction to Joe's post. The Catfish Johnny's shows are on Tuesday's at noon, not Wednesday's.
In fact I'll be leaving in about two hours to do the show, since I'm part of the staff band.
Anyone that's in central Florida is welcome to stop by. Catfish Johnny's is in Lake Panasoffkee, about 3 miles west of I75 at exit 64. The show starts at noon and usually runs past 3PM. It is almost exclusively traditional country music. Catfish Johnny (Johnny Galvin) is a big Wynn Stewart fan and he worked the road with Tommy Collins. We even get some Nashville talent that stops by when they are in the area. Last winter we got to back Jack Greene for a couple of numbers.
Opps sorry Jack about the day mixup..I intend to make it up there soon, good thing I didn't show up on a Wed.There would have been myself and one big Aligator looking for you guys..Good luck today..
