The Drifting Cowboys

WEB SITE DEVOTED TO THE DRIFTING COWBOYS

Although Hank Williams was as country as they come, his stage clothes were pure western, as was the name of his band, The Drifting Cowboys. Williams formed the first version of his band in late 1937, and over the years the group went through members at an amazing rate. During the 15 years that the group existed, literally hundreds of musicians were Drifting Cowboys, if only for a night or two. Hank Williams' fan Nathan Parker has devoted himself to the impossible task of tracking down and documenting the many people who played in the band. Parker has assembled bios and photos of nearly 40 former Drifting Cowboys, as well as a discography of some of the records they played on over the years. The Web site also features a time line of the band's history, where you can learn interesting trivia. For example, three early members had the colorful nicknames of "Pee Wee" Moultrie,
"Boots" Harris, and "Mexican" Charlie. The Drifting Cowboys continued to play after Williams died in 1953, and in 1989 a version of the band toured with Jett Williams, Hank's daughter by girlfriend Bobbie Jett.
