CCR Catalog re-issued by Fantasy Records

On the oldies station I listen to driving to work, it's been reported that Fantasy Records is re-releasing the whole Creedence Clearwater Revival Catalog - 7 CD's plus additional liner notes by the original writers of said notes. (Must have found a few who had some brain cells left.)

I guess Mr. John Fogerty's having a worse day than me today...I guess suing the man for copyright infringement on his own songs wasn't enough.

I'm only just barely aware of the story here--so these are the guys that Fogerty has been at war with all these years?
So he won't see cent one from any of this?

I think that may be sorted out, as in the last time he came out on tour, 1999, he was actually performing some old CCR tunes, which John never used to do, as of course Fantasy made $$ every time he performed one of the songs from CCR.
So I would assume that a compromise has been made after 25 years or so!

Fantasy really screwed Fogerty. I hope that some pirates get ahold of this box set and inject lots of counterfeits into the channel. Fantasy should not be allowed to profit again from their ill-gotten gains.

I am suprised at you being a proponent of counterfeiting.

Guess I missed the CCR controversy.

Like I said, I barely know the outlines of the story myself but it was my understanding that Fogerty lost all rights to his songs so that every time he performed them, these Fantasy guys got the royalties. Hence, for years he refused to perform his own songs. Then when he wrote new songs that were like the old ones Fantasy sued him for infringing on their copyright! He has since resumed performing his classics. I don't know if he reached an accomodation with these guys or if he's just listening to the fans who are ticked off to come out and hear him and not get to hear their old faves.
You would think that Fantasy would cut a deal with him--x% of the sales of the box set in return for his public endorsement of the project. He could see some good cash and they could triple sales. Maybe.

Do I have the facts anywhere near right on this story? How did he lose the rights to begin with? Anyone know? It's not like he's some illiterate Delta dirt farmer.

Ah, now I believe that has something to do with his publishing Co. being sold off, or something of the like.
Basically it's true they sued Fogerty for sounding too much like CCR, which is pretty screwed.
Then again Neil young got sued for not sounding like Neil Young by Geffen Records!

What a great industry,but then the weird thing about recorded music, is that you make it, and pay for it {advance on royalties and all that}, yet you don't own it.

Yeah - if you were a software developer and Bill Gates wanted to market your application but told you that you had to reimburse HIM for using his development platform, you'd tell him to stick it...But musicians do what amounts to the same thing all the time.

Seriously, I took a legal database searching course one time and looked up the John Fogerty case. I'm not a lawyer by any means, but you could read enough of it to see that it was Ugly..

I do oppose counterfeiting, but in this one case I make an exception. Sometimes the law is just plain wrong.

Listen to the tune "Vance Can't Dance" on the Centerfield C.D. That may give you some insight as to how John was screwed. At least how he feels about the whole mess.
