Jon, I'm not sure. It starts out "What makes you treat me as if I were only a friend, What have I done that has made you so different and cold". The last line is "I will be gone when you read this last letter from me". I think Waylon Jennings had it out and also ET.

Well, as you'll see, Jackie, I sent you ET's Soldier's Last Letter which starts "when the postman delivered the letter"
and that clearly is not the one. I wish I could give you the other but I don't have it anywhere. I assume it's got to do with Ronnie and I really wanted to help.

Jackie,
You've got mail. I think the lyric is pretty accurate.

"The Last Letter" was written by Rex Griffin.
The only other songs of his that I'm aware of are "Just Call Me Losesome From Now On" and "Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon?"

Griffin must have been a tragic charactor. Two failed marriages and a life of alcoholism took their toll. He had a mighty gift for applying his pain to paper.I'd like to know more about his life. I think I'll do a search.

Hope I have helped you.

Gregg

You all are a wonderful bunch of folks. I'm honored to be a part of the Forum Family.

I wanted these lyrics to put on a memorial page at my web site for my friend. For some reason this song was special to him.

Thanks again for the words to this song.

Folks you are so good and fast.
By the way Rex's version can be found on disk one of the Decca Country box set
