Im having a hard time finding a bar in longer lengths. I was looking for 4" x 7/8".

Longest I could find is 3.75" but its 1" diameter.

Does anyone make an off the shelf 3.75" or larger bar by 7/8" diameter bar?

Todd Clinesmith makes polymer bars and has a shop in Oregon. His bars can be either a black or white color, and he makes 7/8 diameter bars, as well as 15/16 diameter bars, he also makes bars that weigh an inch too.

Quite a few years ago, one of the Forumites mentioned he used longer bars like that on his 12-string pedal steel...to have the ability to cover all strings at the same time, should he need to. He wanted to be able to cover very low notes and very high notes simultaneously.

That’s what I like about it too, Lee. I don’t really get the “fit in the thumb pocket” thing. When I do that, my index finger extends way past the bullet nose and it feels unnatural. But I really like having the access to wide grips on the infrequent occasions that I use them. Technically, Paul Franklin says longer bar for longer fingers, not necessarily more strings.

Honestly I just want to try it. I was Watching Paul Franklin talk about bar length and it seems plausible. Would help me keep my bar parallel to the fret When sliding/moving. If I placed the bar back far enough to catch my hand, which keeps the back of the bar rigid and parallel, the front of my bar is behind my finger tips quite a bit. And then I can't see the fret.

Thought id try it. Who knows. Worth a shot.

I fought a 3 1/4" bar for years. The guy who got me into steel said, "This is the bar to use". About 2017 I bought a S12 guitar. There was a Dunlop 921 11.5oz 1" X 3 3/4" bar in the case.
The bars 11.5oz weight seemed a little hard to control, With quick up and down runs on the neck. I chucked it in a friends lathe and drilled it out. Got weight down to 9.7oz, It now is my favorite bar. A 1" diameter allows my fingers to grip below the center of the bar, Giving a better controlling grip on the bar.
