Something for us experienced (older) people

Post by Kenneth Dale »

Speaking from my own experience.

As we get older things don't work as well as they used to, especially our hands due a lot to arthritis. I had previously designed an adapter to help me hold the round tone bar. Some of you may remember it. Age and arthritis have continued to take it's toll and I have found it not to work as well. My main problem seemed to be my thumb and getting the bar to lay flat across the strings. Having retired from the design world this presented a challenge that I could not resist. Thinking a bit out of the box I decided to loosely capture the thumb. Because my wrist did not bend quite as well as it used to I slanted the tone bar upward 4 degrees which was perfect (a lucky guess). After about 16 revisions and several 3D prints I had something that felt comfortable and worked. I sent a picture of this to a fellow player and he suggested that I put it up here for sale. I am not interested in selling this but I will send the STL file to anyone that wants to print it themselves or has a buddy that will print it for them. The file is for the left hand but mirroring in the printer slicing software will make it for the right hand. I'm right handed but though a dumb mistake I made the original model for the left hand. I recommend that you print it in ABS or ASA but PETG should also work.

Very creative solution to a common problem. There have been so many excellent examples of creative solutions due to injuries or conditions that a nice long chapter in a book could/should be dedicated to it. I applaud your efforts and results and appreciate your sharing of it.
