NV112 - Switch to power different speakers.

Post by Richard Sinkler »

I would like to add a switch to my NV112 to be able to switch from the internal speaker to an extension speaker cabinet. I have a 15" cabinet I would like to use with the 112, INSTEAD of the internal 12" speaker. What kind of switch would I use? How would I wire it? One side of the switch would go to the internal speaker and the other would go to the extension speaker jack.

Do you want to be able to switch on the fly or just select one or the other for a period of time?

Looks like the easiest thing to do if you're not randomly switching back and forth, would be to just wire in a jack on the NV112 rear panel next to the headphone jack. I don't know if there is a way to tap the headphone jack for that.

Simplest thing is run your amp's speaker cabling to a speaker jack on the rear panel instead of the onboard speaker. That way you could select one speaker or the other by just plugging or unplugging it. That's provided your 15 cab has a jack.

I don't know of a safe and proper way to use a switch to do that.

Of course you'd need a separate cable/plug ass'y for ea. speaker/speaker cabinet.

That's the way I solved the issue with my old Silvertone 1482 so that I could use the big 6 way cabinet or the existing 12 incher.

That was my original idea. But I would use a dual jack plate I already have, mount it to the lower removable back on the amp. The speaker cable that now goes to the internal speaker, will go to one of the jacks. The second jack would be wired to the internal speaker. The jack that is wired to the chassis could be used for the external speaker, and a short jumper speaker cord could plug into both jacks that would route the signal to the internal speaker.

That is what I originally thought too and it might be neater, but my thinking is it's better to just use one jack and only plug in the needed cable. Eliminate a second jack and additional wiring just for simplicity's sake and avoid confusion. That assumes that you're not going to be switching back and forth a bunch for a particular event. Either way without a switch. I personally don't like switches on speaker connections for various reasons.

Good luck with it however you proceed.

I have a friend that built me a cabinet for my BW 1502 out of Black Walnut. I have had a head cabinet for my NV400 built by Rick Johnson for many years. I may get my friend to build a head cabinet for the guts of my NV112. Possibly even a speaker cab for the TT12 speaker in my NV112. That would be cool.

Is there a reason you can't just unplug the one you don't want and plug the other in? Switching on the output side of a power amplifier is a prime way to let the magic smoke escape and it's really expensive putting it back in.

The speaker in the 112 is hard wired to the cable coming out of the chassis. The cable will have to be wired to a jack . The internal speaker would have to be wired to a 1/4" phone plug that would plug into the Jack to use it. The external speaker cabinet would plug into that jack if I wanted to use it instead of the internal speaker.

As far a smoking the power amp, all that would be happening is changing one speaker for another. It shouldn't do anything to the amp. How would that be different than using a Bandmaster head and different speaker cabinets?
