Steel player w/ Jim Lauderdale years ago

Post by Patrick Thornhill »

As the subject implies, I've got a question that will probably be very hard to answer, BUT it has been on my mind for a while, and if there is any pool of knowledge that can answer it, it's this pool here. :D

I saw Junior Brown play at The Roxy in Los Angeles in 2002, with Jim Lauderdale opening. Whoever was playing steel with Lauderdale was tearing it up and I can still vividly picture them playing. Really blew me away.
Soooo....
Does anyone know who that player might have been? I know that Tommy Detamore worked with Lauderdale and produced his "This Changes Everything" album in 2016, but I really have no idea if he'd have done a tour 13 years prior.

Thanks y'all!!

Robby Turner played on a lot of his records, not sure if he toured with him though.

Could be Al Perkins; as Al played on the Record "Planet Love" 1992 with "The King Of Broken Hearts" on it.
He did tour with many.
Perkins appeared on stage alongside James Burton and Keith Richards at the Gram Parsons tribute show in California in summer 2004.

Possibly Jim Hoke. I saw him with Lauderdale on Music City Roots once.

Oh for damn sure - Gary Morse’s work with Dwight Yoakum was (and remains) a major inspiration for me! Pretty sure it wasn’t him though.

Thanks so much for offering all of the suggestions!
