Eight String Resonator String Gauges

Post by Paul Strojan »

I just picked up an Eight string Gold tone resonator and I would like to tune it to the C6/A7 tuning (E, C, A, G, E, C#, A) and would like to know what string gauges to use. Also there is the question of what to do with the last string. I am thinking about either a re-enterant D string on top or a lower string gauge.

This will help with string gauges,

One interesting option on the bottom would be F#, for an F#m7 chord on the lowest 4 strings.
Current Tunings:
GBDGBD (open G)
GBDEGBD (G6)

Just a cautionary note that the PBS-8 is typically set up for dobro G6 tuning. So, the possibility exists that:

1. Putting a skinny C6 string set may result is some buzzing. Skinny strings in big slots.

2. The "voice" of the guitar typically won't be as powerful as lighter strings can't excite the cone as much as the heavier G6 set.

Only one way to find out.

String it up.
