Jimmy Crawford loved Buddy Emmons

Post by Larry Behm »

At one of the many St Louis steel conventions I ended up in a room with Jimmy Crawford and Russ Hicks. Jimmy was telling many stories about Buddy Emmons. At times he had tears in his eyes as he reminisced. I was very moved, they were true friends for sure.

This illustrates that even top musicians loved and appreciated Buddy. He was a rare person. Thanks for sharing, Larry!

Wish I had been there, Larry. Jimmy Crawford was a king-sized character too, though diminutive in stature!

Some of my happiest musical memories are from the time I spent with Jimmie on the road with Slim Whitman.

This was back in the UK. The bandleader was Harold Bradley and the guitar-player was Andy Reiss. With Jimmie on steel, I was in good company! ! was playing acoustic guitar with Slim, and steel/Telecaster for the support act. Talk about a baptism-of-fire, sitting at my steel with Jimmie in the wings!

He was always accessible with advice or suggestions and, of course, when one of my KLs broke, he was right there taking care of it.

What a fund of stories he had! He had some great jokes, too. He and I got banished to the back of the bus: Jimmie would be explaining his famous 'cluster' to me and I'd ply him with questions. The other guys let us know that, if we were going to 'talk steel', we could do it out of ear-shot! :)

And yes, Jimmie revered Buddy Emmons above everyone, yet Buddy was heard to say that he 'wished he had Jimmie's right-hand!'

They're both heroes of mine.
