20 3/4" Scale length lap Steel---Strings?

Post by Mike Dexter »

I 'dabbled' on lap steel many years ago. Left it alone to pursue banjo / guitar /double bass. Now back to lap steel. I currently have a cheap 20 3/4" scale length lap steel. 6 string. What gauge strings to use? Nickel?--Good sound with the tone bar?

C6th / A7th tuning. High to low--ECAGEC#

Would these gauge's suit the scale length?--tension wise?
High to Low:
14 18 22w 28w 36w 40w
or
15 18 22w 24w 30w 30w 34w

Would the above gauges suit all scale length's up to 25 1/2"?

That depends on the tuning.

I just ended up with a very short-scale Benoit 8-string dobro... strung it E13 Leon. I used the John Ely string gauge chart:

www.hawaiiansteel.com/graphics/pdf/stri ... _chart.pdf

and went up about 0.001-2 for each suggested gauge, from the heavy end. Works great!
Too much junk to list... always getting more.
